Srinagar, Feb 20 (KNO): The Jammu & Kashmir government on Friday said two major water supply schemes worth over ₹822 lakh are under execution in Kangan constituency of Ganderbal district to address inadequate drinking water supply in several areas.
Replying to an unstarred question tabled by MLA Mian Mehar Ali in the Assembly, the Minister Incharge, Jal Shakti Department, said that water supply to Kachnambal and adjoining areas remains inadequate due to depletion of original water sources.
The minister, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), informed the House that the Water Supply Scheme (WSS) Kachnambal–Barwulla is being executed under UT Capex with Wangath Nallah as the source. The scheme includes a 0.20 MGD Rapid Sand Filtration Plant and two service reservoirs and has achieved nearly 90 per cent progress.
As per Annexure A tabled in the House, WSS Kachnambal (Beam Code: PHES234100938) has an approved cost of ₹508.45 lakh. An amount of ₹387.89 lakh has been spent up to 31.03.2025. Funds to the tune of ₹233.75 lakh have been earmarked for 2025–26, out of which ₹43.03 lakh has been spent so far. The scheme has achieved 83 per cent physical progress and is expected to be completed by March 2026.
Similarly, WSS Chontiwaliwar (Beam Code: PHES234100912) has an approved cost of ₹314.22 lakh. The cumulative expenditure up to 31.03.2025 stands at ₹114.83 lakh. For the year 2025–26, ₹110.50 lakh has been made available, with ₹36.59 lakh spent so far. The scheme has recorded 75 per cent physical progress and is also scheduled for completion by March 2026.
The government said that once completed, the schemes will ensure water supply as per prescribed norms in terms of both quality and quantity.
The minister further informed that Rezu Pati, Tunnel Pati, Hari Ganwan and Sumbal areas presently depend on Gitchkhudan/Sondab Nallah and a local spring at Tangpathri. However, due to prolonged dry conditions, the discharge has reduced, though improvement is expected after recent precipitation.
In Khudhar Wussan, water is being supplied through Chatergul (Bremshar) Nallah, but around 13 households located at higher elevations are facing inadequate supply due to contour-related constraints.
The Upper Belt of Waliwar, including parts of Panchayat Halqa Chuntiwaliwar-A and C, relies on spring and rivulet-based schemes. While these generally meet demand, tail-end households face low supply during extreme dry spells.
Besides ongoing works, efforts are being made for source augmentation, replacement of intake mains, construction and repair of service reservoirs and upgradation of ageing distribution networks, the government said, adding that tanker services are being provided as an interim measure wherever required—(KNO)
